PubCoder creates books for kids with reading difficulties

Today, something important will take place at the 31st International Book Fair of Turin (Salone Internazionale del Libro di Torino): four major Italian publishers, Mondadori, De Agostini Libri, Giunti EditoreGeMS, Mauri Spagnol Group will discuss how they decided to start publishing books for kids, digitally and on paper, including some for kids with reading difficulties and autism.

“I libri per tutti” (Books for all) is an editorial project for inclusion that provides books for kids in digital format with the inclusion of symbols used in the Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) to promote reading accessibility to all children.

Today, in Italy, there are few books really accessible to everyone, and those suitable for children with reading difficulties are almost impossible to find, not even in our public libraries.

So months ago we asked ourselves: what can we do?

We teamed up with Fondazione PAIDEIA, an Italian not-for-profit organisation who supports families and children with special needs. We brought our experience and digital expertise and worked closely with the professionals who everyday work with autistic children and their families. For months, we experimented new solutions verifying possible risks and attempting new paths. Then together with Paideia, we met with the publishers and told them about a reality that only in Italy involves more than 500.000 people. We also believe this is only a small part of a much wider problem, for example, the many non-native-speaking children in our schools today.

It took us months of hard working but today we can finally start!
